Bettongs trial at Mulligans Flat Sanctuary – Canberra

in the news Sep 24, 2021

I was recently asked to take two of my best dogs to Canberra’s north to work with rangers at the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary.

The rangers needed to trial the use of dogs to hunt down a nest of feral rabbits. The beautiful sanctuary was successful in eliminating cats and foxes sometime ago, but that meant the area had become a “rabbit paradise” as they had no predators! It was a perfect environment for rabbits to breed freely!

I took Tommy and Bolt my two English springer spaniel detector dogs to the site and demonstrated very quickly their ability to locate the pesky rabbits. My dogs are trained to ignore other scents and to keep distance from the bettongs so they were not disturbed.
